Ranch Dressing

Three Miles Per Ounce
Ranch dressing. Mayonnaise. Miracle Whip. Before you reach for them, here's what they cost.
An ounce of ranch dressing is 300 calories.
A marathon runner burns approximately 100 calories per mile. To burn 300 calories, you run three miles.
One ounce. Three miles.
The Portion Problem
Here's the part that makes this worse: nobody puts an ounce of dressing on their salad. An ounce is two tablespoons. It looks like almost nothing once it's spread across a bowl of lettuce. In practice, most people pour four ounces — sometimes more.
Four ounces of ranch is 1,200 calories. To burn that off, you run twelve miles. Two 10Ks, back to back, just to break even on the salad dressing.
The same math applies to mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, and every other creamy condiment. They are all essentially the same product — dense fat with minimal water content, minimal fiber, nothing that slows the absorption down. The brand on the label doesn't change what's inside it.
Why These Have to Go Permanently
This isn't about moderation. It isn't about using less.
The problem with keeping these condiments in your life is that the amount it takes to actually taste them — to deliver what your palate is looking for — puts you in a caloric hole that's nearly impossible to dig out of daily. You can have a perfectly reasonable day of eating and undo it entirely with how you dress your salad.
And because these foods don't trigger the satiety signals that whole foods do — they don't fill you up, they don't slow your digestion, they don't tell your brain you've had enough — you don't compensate for them by eating less of everything else.
They have to go. Completely, permanently. That's the hard no.
What Comes Instead
There are alternatives that don't cost you miles. Mustard is essentially zero calories. Salsa is water, vegetables, and trace amounts of carbohydrate. A squeeze of lemon or lime over a salad is negligible. Vinegar-based dressings are a fraction of the caloric load of creamy ones.
None of them taste exactly like ranch. But none of them require a 12-mile run either.
